So I’ve been inspired to write about LOVE for the next 13 days; and I will be using one of my most favourite passages of scripture – 1 Corinthians 13 to lead me through these 13 days of LOVE.
1 Corinthians 13 is a renowned passage of scripture that speaks of what Love OUGHT to look like. There are 13 verses to explore (one at a time) over the next 13 days…. which will actually bring us tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo February 14th VALENTINE’S DAY!!!!!!! (How fitting)…. The day we traditionally use to Celebrate ‘Love’!!!!
I thought it would be fun, and enlightening to explore this passage, verse by verse (one verse a day) as we prepare for the month of ‘LOVE’…. I say that with a smile because I just love LOVE…. I believe that the world and the people IN the world really need more love!!! So why not celebrate it?
I know that some people get their ‘hateration’ hats on when it comes to V-Day… but I just don’t understand why? I just can’t understand why people make up reasons to NOT celebrate Love… Personally I think we should have a celebration of love EVERY month… I think every month we should pick a person we care about and make a point to express our love to them in a ‘special’ way. I mean… really… who doesn’t need a little more love in their life???
Ok… so enough of my gibber jabbering about v-day… let’s look at the 1st verse for today.
Verse 1
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
For many of us we have heard this familiar verse read over and over again at weddings, but how often have you stopped to actually examine and really deeply explore the meaning behind it?
To speak in tongues of men is what the average person can typically do, however within scripture to speak in ‘tongues of angels’ refers to a ‘heavenly’ language – what is seen as a ‘gift’ – something VERY VERY special, and even sought after.
As special as ‘speaking in tongues’ might seem, we learn here that if a person is able to do that (speak in tongues) YET does not have LOVE… they are like a ‘resounding gong, or clanging cymbal’… basically… A BAG OF NOISE… Annoying, pointless noise… useless…
hummmm. To not have love makes us ‘useless’?!?!?! I’ve never thought of a ‘loveless’ life that way before… but I guess when you think about it… I can see how that is so very true.
For me, I’m gathering that working towards having LOVE inside is way more important, meaningful, and useful than anything I can let out of my mouth.
Something to think about…
Note to self… “Talk less…. LOVE more!”
