Eating Healthy & Maintaining your Mental Health

What you put in… is what you get out… Think about that the next time you are sitting in front of a plate of junk food, or considering skipping a meal.

So the focus this week is on maintaining good Mental Health, and the 2nd component to having good mental health is eating healthy.  UK’s Mental Health Association suggests that poor diet has played a role in the significant increase in mental health problems over the past 50 years.  When I read that I couldn’t help but think ‘hummm that kinda makes sense’.  When you consider the kind of food that we consume in North America and the quantity of food we are consuming it’s hard to think we could continue eating the way we tend to (high fat/sugary foods, lacking in nutrients) without negative health repercussions.

We need to remember that our body relies on the vitamins and nutrients we ingest from our food.  These vitamins contribute to our mental capacity and capabilities, so when the foods we eat are deficient in necessary vitamins/supplements, our brain will also suffer and go without the necessary nutrients required for optimal use.

In the pursuit of Good Mental Health as well as overall physical health it is recommended that we eat a well balanced diet of: fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (fish, nuts, seeds & eggs), Protein, and Whole Grains.

Yumm yumm yummm… now that you’ve been reminded about healthy eating make sure you adjust your meal plan for today to take into consideration your mental wellness…  🙂
